Exciting new initiative to keep Norfolk beautiful
Norfolk Island Travel Centre are proud to be sponsoring the Norfolk Island Waste Reduction Challenge, a fun initiative for the community to look at different ways to reduce waste on the Island.
At the Norfolk Island Travel Centre, our core business is focused on selling Norfolk Island package holidays to inbound visitors and marketing the Island to new audiences. Our physical waste is relatively low as the nature of our business is to provide a service and assist visitors with booking travel to Norfolk Island. Where possible we do not print documents and save soft copies instead, used excess paper is recycled into notebooks or cross-shredded and given away for use in compost, chicken coops etc.
We love to partner with businesses who are sustainably minded, including an initiative we started 7 years ago with former conservation group WildMob. We started asking our clients to reduce use of plastic bags by giving them a reusable shopping bag upon arrival on Norfolk with a message encouraging them to help. To use the cloth bag whilst on holiday, reducing the use of plastic bags, helping to keep the waters and environment free of plastic rubbish and to protect our environment for endemic species such as the Green Parrot (the portrait of which features on our bag). These bags are also a practical promotional tool for the Island as visitors take them home for use in their day-to-day lives.
Our team is very conscious of our environmental footprint. We’ve introduced practical habits in the office to minimise waste, such as collecting lunch scraps for feeding chickens at home, avoid using takeaway containers - instead we take plates and reusable cups to nearby cafes including our office lunch haunt Seriously Chocolate. We’re a solar powered office and we’re mindful of turning off lights and electrical equipment when not required to save on energy.
The Norfolk Island Travel Centre supports the Prinke and Melaleuca Waste Reduction Challenge as an important initiative to encourage our community and visitors to adopt simple and practical solutions to reducing general household waste.
